You should protect your capitol at a point. Points matter on maps: you can win game if you have a strong point. Some capitols are odd. My city was built far from enemies. On the other hand -- example -- Tokyo was built right next to a powerful city. I thought I could get a port. I thought I could win with a port. The Carthraginians civilization, in time, could win with ship. In this game, I won with ship. I could win money off these ships, I could explore, and my idea in most games is colony. I could not lose a city early. This is always a win. In Civilization 4, if you lose or win a city, you lose or win a city. Much like other games, for every loss a win, unless you are playing Chess.
